The follow up question I am often asked is if there is any benefit from going through a diagnostic process if there is no “cure”.

I usually answer with a resounding yes! It is enlightening to know what the cause or causes of one’s confusion and memory loss is (are); reversible causes such as depression, infection, thyroid imbalance, dehydration and many others can be treated, with amazing improvement in cognition. And even if the cause is irreversible, understanding which areas of cognition are still strong helps us know how to plan accordingly. The only time I hesitate to go beyond basic labs and evaluation with the individual’s primary care physician is when the person wouldn’t understand why they are being tested, and it would just feel humiliating and demeaning.
